Our story

Built on a train, for people on trains

TrainSpeed started as a simple question at 283 km/h: how fast are we actually going?

Somewhere between Hiroshima and Shin-Osaka, a Romanian software engineer living in Japan was watching the countryside blur past the window of a Nozomi. The seat-back display showed the destination, the time, everything — except the one number that mattered in the moment. So he opened his phone, and by Osaka there was a working speedometer running entirely in the browser.

No app to install. No account to create. No location leaving the device by default. Just the phone's GPS, a little math, and a big honest number on screen. That's still exactly what TrainSpeed is — it just works on every train now, not only the one it was born on.

It's free, and it will stay free. If it makes one window seat a little more fun, it's done its job.

"The best tools disappear into the moment. TrainSpeed is just you, the window, and the speed."

What we believe

Four principles, no compromises

01

Free forever

No paywalls, no premium tier, no ads following you around. Speed should be free.

02

Private by design

Your location is used on-device to estimate speed and never uploaded — unless you opt in to the leaderboard.

03

No app required

It’s a web page. Open it, press start, done. Add it to your home screen if you like the icon.

04

Works everywhere

Any passenger train, any country, any modern phone browser. One tool for the whole world’s rails.

Privacy, plainly

Your location never leaves your phone

TrainSpeed reads your GPS position only to estimate how fast you're moving. That calculation happens on your device, in your browser. Location is uploaded only when you explicitly opt in to publish a saved run.

  • Location is processed only in your browser to calculate speed.
  • Nothing is uploaded unless you explicitly opt in to publish a run.
  • No accounts, no cookies for tracking, no data sold to anyone.

For passenger use only. Do not use while driving or operating machinery.
